India's opposition leaders have launched a scathing attack on the government over the recently announced India-US trade deal, citing a lack of transparency and details. The deal, which was announced after a phone call between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump, has been criticized by Congress leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, who accused the Prime Minister of being 'compromised' and 'rattled.' Gandhi pointed to the Epstein Files, which contain sensitive information about business magnate Gautam Adani, as one of the pressure points on the Prime Minister. He also claimed that the trade deal would damage the country's image and that the Prime Minister had 'sold the country' in the deal. Other opposition leaders, including Congress MP Shashi Tharoor and Karnataka minister Priyank Kharge, also criticized the deal, citing concerns over the potential impact on Indian farmers and the severe trade imbalance. Tharoor noted that the government had not shared any concrete details of the agreement with Parliament or the public, while Kharge dismissed the deal as a 'GST Bachao Utsav,' alleging a severe trade imbalance. In contrast, BJP leaders hailed the deal as a 'historic breakthrough,' claiming that it would create new opportunities for farmers, MSMEs, entrepreneurs, and skilled workers. Union commerce and industry minister Piyush Goyal said the agreement would help India access advanced US technology and accelerate the country's journey towards Viksit Bharat 2047. The debate over the India-US trade deal highlights the ongoing tensions between the government and the opposition over transparency and accountability. As the deal takes effect, concerns over its impact on the country's economy and its people remain a pressing issue.
