Congress leader Rahul Gandhi visited Madhya Pradesh's Indore on Saturday, where he met with families affected by a recent water contamination crisis that led to a devastating outbreak of vomiting and diarrhoea in the Bhagirathpura locality. At least 12 deaths have been reported, but the government claims only six people died. Gandhi condemned the government's negligence, calling for proper compensation and treatment costs to be covered for the affected families. 'The government must take responsibility for this tragedy. The responsible individuals or government officials should be held accountable,' Gandhi said. He also criticized the state's 'double engine' government, saying it has created a 'toxic' environment with 'poison in the water, air, medicine, and land.' Gandhi's visit came after he shared a post on X, where he slammed the BJP government for its failure to provide basic amenities, saying, 'If you demand answers, they'll roll in the bulldozer!' The affected families expressed gratitude towards Gandhi for his support, with one resident receiving a cheque of ₹1 lakh as financial assistance. However, they emphasized that the government's aid is insufficient, and they need clean water, not just monetary compensation. The residents of Bhagirathpura claim 24 people have died due to the water contamination, contradicting the state government's status report of seven deaths, including a five-month-old infant. Gandhi's visit has highlighted the community's struggles and demands for justice and accountability from the government.
