Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has expressed concern over the escalating protests and unrest in Iran, describing the situation as 'very serious'. The Chairman of the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs warned that the coming days will be crucial for the Khamenei regime, which is facing 'difficult circumstances'. Tharoor's comments come as the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) issued a fresh warning to Indians, advising them to avoid travel to Iran until further notice. The MEA's warning follows an earlier advisory issued on January 5, amid the protests. Iran's airspace has been closed since Wednesday, with Tehran extending the closure without explanation. The protests, which began 20 days ago over record inflation and a steep fall in the Iranian currency, have now spread to over 280 locations across the country. Tharoor highlighted the limited information available from Iran due to the ongoing internet blackout. 'It looks very serious, but we are not getting much information out of Iran; the internet has been cut,' he said. The Congress MP stated that approximately 3,000 protesters have been killed, and the situation is 'grim in Iran'. The coming days will be critical for the Khamenei regime, and it will have to survive in 'very difficult circumstances' if it is to survive at all, Tharoor warned. The MEA's warning is a testament to the escalating situation in Iran, and the need for Indians to exercise caution when considering travel to the country.
