In a strategic move, Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) Director General Praveen Kumar has been appointed as the additional charge of Border Security Force (BSF) director general, effective from December 1. The decision comes as Daljit Singh Chaudhary, the outgoing BSF chief, is set to retire on November 30. Praveen Kumar, a seasoned officer with over two decades of experience in the Intelligence Bureau (IB), has been leading the ITBP since October 1. A 1993 batch West Bengal cadre Indian Police Service officer, Kumar has witnessed several high-profile operations, including counter-insurgency efforts in the Northeast. The BSF has played a crucial role in neutralizing cross-border threats, with significant successes in Operation Sindoor. During the operation, BSF personnel earned two Vir Chakras and 16 gallantry medals for their bravery. With nearly 27,000 personnel, the BSF is the world's largest border guarding force. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to attend the 60th edition of the Directors General's conference in Raipur on November 29-30, which will focus on 'Viksit Bharat: Security Dimensions.' The conference will be attended by top officials from central armed police forces, including Kumar and Chaudhary, who are currently in Chhattisgarh's Raipur for the annual gathering.
