The Jammu and Kashmir Police has dismissed speculation surrounding the recent explosion at Nowgam Police Station as unfounded and misleading. On November 14, 2023, a blast at the police station killed nine people, including an SIA inspector and a naib tehsildar. Authorities have confirmed that the explosion was accidental, caused by the collection of explosive samples from a cache of recovered explosives by forensic experts. The police have set up a high-level committee to investigate the incident, led by Principal Secretary, including representatives from the Home Department, Inspector General of Kashmir zone, Srinagar district magistrate, and a senior scientist from the Central Forensic Sciences Laboratory. The blast damaged nearby houses and injured 32 people. Eyewitnesses who were collecting samples at the time of the explosion tragically lost their lives. As the investigation continues, officials are working to determine the cause of the blast, with one theory suggesting that a detonator may have been concealed in the explosives. The police have emphasized that speculation surrounding the incident is unnecessary and that the matter is being thoroughly probed. The police station is situated in a residential area in central Kashmir's Srinagar district, where 2,900 kilograms of IED-making material, including ammonium nitrate, were stored at the time of the blast. With all eyewitnesses having died in the blast, investigators are relying on injured personnel and forensic evidence to piece together the events surrounding the explosion. The probe aims to determine the truth behind this tragic incident and provide closure to the affected families.
