In a shocking turn of events, Anant Kumar Singh, a JD(U) MLA from Mokama, took the oath of office on Tuesday despite being in jail for the murder of Dularchand Yadav, a supporter of the Jan Suraaj Party. Singh was allowed to attend the Assembly proceedings on parole, a decision that has raised eyebrows. Singh, who is also known as 'Chhote Sarkar', has been a dominant figure in the Mokama constituency since 2005, winning four consecutive terms. However, his rise to power has been marred by controversy, including multiple criminal cases, including murder and arms-related charges. According to his election affidavit, he owns assets worth ₹37.88 crore. Singh's presence in the Assembly comes after he was arrested ahead of the 2025 Bihar Assembly elections in connection with Yadav's murder. The incident occurred during election campaigning in Mokama on October 30, when clashes broke out between rival groups. Police have named Singh as the main accused in the case. After taking the oath, Singh touched the feet of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, his political mentor, before returning to the prison vehicle. In a brief interaction with journalists, he took a swipe at Leader of the Opposition Tejashwi Yadav, claiming his political future was 'finished'. Singh's comments have sparked a heated debate in the political circles, with many questioning the decision to allow him to attend the Assembly proceedings. Singh's shift from being a don-turned-politician to a JD(U) MLA has been a subject of interest, especially given his multiple affiliations over the years. He has contested elections as an Independent and later on an RJD ticket before returning to the JD(U) for the 2025 elections. As he begins his term as MLA, Singh's presence in the Assembly has raised questions about the accountability of politicians with a dubious past.
