India's External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has issued a warning to countries creating obstacles for international talent flow. Speaking at a recent conclave, Jaishankar stated that nations imposing too many roadblocks will ultimately be 'net losers', especially in an era of advanced manufacturing where skilled workers are in high demand. Jaishankar emphasized the importance of convincing other nations that sharing talent across borders benefits both parties. He noted that entrepreneurs and technologists are often at the forefront of advocating for mobility, but politicians may oppose it due to their constituencies. The minister linked the reluctance of some countries to allow skilled workers to attempts to relocate manufacturing bases away from China. He pointed out that the pressure on jobs in developed countries is not solely due to immigration, but also because they allowed manufacturing to shift abroad. The warning comes amid a significant crackdown on immigration in the United States, where the Trump administration has introduced a $100,000 H-1B visa application fee. This move aims to make it more challenging for American companies to hire foreign talent. Notably, Indians have accounted for approximately 71% of approved H-1B applications over the past few years, according to the US Citizenship and Immigration Services. Jaishankar's statement highlights the need for countries to work together and recognize the benefits of international talent exchange. He emphasized that work will continue to flow, even if people cannot travel, and that the world will adapt to the changing landscape of global mobility.
