A PhD scholar at Jamia Millia Islamia has been banned from the campus for the remainder of his doctoral program following allegations that he organized a protest to commemorate the 17th anniversary of the Batla House encounter. The university's Discipline Committee found Saurabh Tripathi, a member of the All India Students' Association (AISA), guilty of disrupting the academic environment and endangering student safety. Tripathi was also accused of disturbing the semester examination and organizing an unauthorized gathering in August. Despite being deemed guilty, the committee chose not to rusticate him, opting for a strict campus ban instead. This decision has drawn criticism from AISA, which claims the ban is an attack on student dissent. Tripathi plans to challenge the decision in court, stating that the punishment is an injustice. The Batla House encounter, which occurred in 2008, remains a contentious issue, with many calling for a judicial probe into the incident.
