A 15-20 year old male elephant was found dead in the Sosopi forest of West Singhbhum district in Jharkhand's Chaibasa Forest Division on Tuesday. The elephant's body showed no external injury marks and its tusks remained intact. This is the third instance of an elephant carcass being found without external injury marks in less than two weeks. The regional chief conservator of forests, Smita Pankaj, expressed concern over the mysterious deaths of three elephants in the region. She mentioned that the viscera reports from the Forensic Science Laboratory in Ranchi for the two female elephants found dead on November 15 are pending. To expedite the process, the forest department is considering sending the viscera of the male elephant to two centres - the FSL and the veterinary unit of Birsa Agriculture University in Ranchi. A post-mortem examination was conducted on the male elephant, revealing haemorrhage marks in the small intestine but no external injury marks or signs of poisoning. The forest department has ruled out poaching as the tusks are intact. The body was buried at the spot. On November 15, two female elephants were found dead in the Noamundi forest range of Chaibasa Forest Division. Similar to the male elephant, their bodies showed no external injury marks, and a post-mortem examination ruled out poisoning or poaching. The forest department is eager to know the reason behind the mysterious deaths of these elephants.
