Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar have put an end to speculation surrounding a potential leadership tussle within the Congress party. The two leaders met for breakfast on Saturday, where they reaffirmed their commitment to working together, citing their successful partnership in 2023 as a model for their future collaboration. However, their claims of unity have been met with skepticism by the opposition BJP, which has long questioned the stability of the Congress administration. Siddaramaiah downplayed the recent tensions between the two leaders, attributing them to media speculation and factionalism within the party. He emphasized that their meeting was a routine discussion on long-term political planning, including the upcoming 2028 assembly elections and local body polls. Shivakumar echoed his CM's sentiments, stating that the party is united and will work together to tackle opposition parties. The opposition BJP, however, remains unconvinced, with leader R Ashoka accusing the Congress of staging a "truce meeting" between two rival factions. Union minister and JD(S) leader HD Kumaraswamy also chimed in, describing the show of unity as a "drama" that has left many people bewildered. The meeting between Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar comes after weeks of speculation surrounding the CM's decision to relinquish his post to his deputy, as per an alleged promise made in 2023. While the high command had reportedly asked the leaders to settle their differences, no concrete decision was made during the meeting. The Karnataka assembly is set to convene soon, and the Congress party will likely face opposition scrutiny over its leadership and policies. As the Congress party looks to repeat its 2023 poll victory in 2028, it remains to be seen whether the show of unity between Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar will be enough to silence their critics and maintain stability within the party.
