Karnataka's deputy chief minister, DK Shivakumar, has sparked speculation about his future in the state, as he prepares to visit Delhi for crucial discussions. Despite his scheduled trip, Shivakumar maintained a united front with CM Siddaramaiah at a government event marking the 50th anniversary of the Anganwadi program. In the run-up to his visit, Shivakumar met with Congress lawmakers from several constituencies, including Malluru, Kolar, Mulbagal, and Kunigal. His brother, MP DK Suresh, has already arrived in Delhi for a series of meetings, fueling speculation about a possible leadership transition. Shivakumar has stated that his primary focus in Delhi will be on pushing for stalled projects in Karnataka. However, his brother declined to comment on the ongoing political debate, instead emphasizing that the government and CM will address any issues. The power struggle stems from a reported agreement between party seniors in 2023, which suggested that Shivakumar would take over as CM after 2.5 years. While the Congress has never officially acknowledged this arrangement, Shivakumar has referred to a 'secret agreement,' leaving the matter open to interpretation. CM Siddaramaiah has repeatedly stressed his commitment to completing his 5-year term, citing the importance of leadership continuity for stability. He has also emphasized his focus on governance and the delivery of the party's guarantee schemes. Former Karnataka CM Basavaraj Bommai has suggested that the Congress high command may consider an alternative candidate, citing the egoistic attitudes of both current contenders. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge has promised to settle the leadership issue through discussions involving all stakeholders, including Rahul Gandhi and the CM and deputy CM.
