Karnataka's director general of police, K Ramachandra Rao, has been suspended over allegations of engaging in improper behavior with women in his office. This latest controversy comes after a video surfaced on social media, appearing to show Rao in a compromising position with a woman. However, it's reported that the video is a compilation of multiple clips recorded at different times. Rao is no stranger to controversy, having been involved in several high-profile cases. One of the most recent incidents dates back to last year, when his stepdaughter, Ranya Rao, was arrested for allegedly smuggling gold at Bengaluru's Kempegowda International Airport. An investigation found that she had used her connections to evade security checks. Rao had initially distanced himself from the situation, stating he had no connection to his stepdaughter's activities. However, he was later sent on compulsory leave and reinstated to his position as DGP. The case is not an isolated incident. Rao was also involved in a 2014 cash seizure case, where police allegedly seized ₹20 lakh from a private bus heading to Kerala. However, merchants claimed the actual amount was ₹2.27 crore. An investigation revealed serious shortcomings in Rao's handling of the case, including allegations of collusion with a businessman. As the chairman and managing director of the Karnataka State Police Housing and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited, Rao was promoted to DGP in September 2023. His tenure has been marked by controversy, with this latest incident raising questions about his behavior and leadership.
