In a shocking case of online extortion, four individuals have been arrested for allegedly assaulting and attempting to extort money from a 39-year-old businessman in Karnataka. The incident unfolded on December 12 in Madikeri, with police saying efforts are underway to apprehend the remaining suspects. According to the police, the victim was befriended by a woman named Rachana on Facebook, who later asked for financial assistance. The businessman, a resident of Mandya district, sent ₹5,000 via PhonePe on November 28. However, when he asked for the money back, Rachana allegedly set a trap, inviting him to meet in Madikeri. On December 12, the victim was taken to a house in the market area, where he spent the evening with Rachana. Later that night, three men broke in, assaulting the victim with a stick and a sword, causing severe injuries. The victim was then forcibly confined, stripped, and a nude video was recorded. The accused threatened him with a toy gun, demanding ₹50 lakh and warning that the video would be uploaded on social media. The victim managed to escape in the early hours of December 13, but the accused allegedly attempted to kidnap him in an autorickshaw, which was caught on CCTV cameras. Based on the victim's complaint, a case was registered under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The police have arrested four individuals, including two women, and are working to apprehend the remaining suspects. Further investigation is ongoing.
