The Kashmir valley has been blanketed in a fresh layer of snow as the 40-day harsh winter period, Chillai-Kalan, officially began on Sunday. The snowfall, accompanied by light rainfall in the plains, has brought relief to residents who had been experiencing a prolonged dry spell. The precipitation has also caused a spike in common ailments, but authorities are well-prepared to tackle the situation. In the higher regions, Gulmarg, Sonmarg, and Sadhna Top received significant snowfall, while Srinagar and other areas in the valley saw intermittent rainfall overnight. Tourists in Sonmarg were seen enjoying the snowfall, while the Gurez-Bandipora road was closed due to heavy rainfall, and authorities advised travelers to avoid unnecessary journeys. As the snowfall is expected to increase over the next 48 hours, residents are bracing for the harsh winter conditions. The Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Omar Abdullah, has assured that all necessary arrangements are in place to tackle the situation. The beginning of Chillai-Kalan is considered a positive omen, signaling plenty of snowfall to come. The 40-day period of harsh winter, which ends on January 30, will be followed by 'Chillai-Khurd' (small cold) and 'Chillai-Bacha' (baby cold). As the region prepares for the long winter ahead, residents are expected to face some hardships, but the snowfall has brought a much-needed respite from the prolonged dry spell.
