Legendary Karnataka Leader Bheemanna Khandre Passes Away at 102

Bheemanna Khandre, a highly respected freedom fighter and senior Congress leader, has left an indelible mark on Karnataka's public life. The 102-year-old, who served as Karnataka's transport minister in the past, breathed his last due to age-related health issues. His family has confirmed the news, which was shared by his son, Karnataka Forest Minister Eshwar Khandre. A prominent figure in the Kalyana Karnataka region, Khandre was a strong advocate for the cooperative movement and played a pivotal role in shaping the region's public life for several decades. He is survived by two sons, including Forest Minister Eshwar Khandre, and four daughters. The veteran leader, who had been unwell for the past 10 to 12 days, was initially treated at a private hospital in Bidar before his care was continued at his residence in Bhalki. Born into a family of lawyers, Khandre trained as a lawyer himself before stepping into public life in the early years after Independence. He went on to serve as an MLA four times and a member of the Legislative Council twice, playing a key role in strengthening the cooperative sector in the region. Khandre's legacy extends to the development of irrigation projects such as Naranja and Karanja, which benefited farmers in the region. As the founding president of the Bidar Cooperative Sugar Factory and the Mahatma Gandhi Sugar Factory, he contributed significantly to the region's economic growth. His dedication to public service and commitment to the welfare of the people have earned him a special place in the hearts of the people of Karnataka.
