A violent clash broke out at Ludhiana Central Jail on Tuesday evening, leaving several inmates and police officials injured. The situation escalated when two inmates, who had been punished for fighting, allegedly made provocative remarks, triggering a massive stone-pelting and brick-throwing incident. Prison Superintendent Kulwant Singh Sidhu was hit on the head with a brick and is receiving treatment in a hospital. Five police officials, including two gazetted officers, were also injured in the chaos. As the situation spiralled out of control, the police commissioner, Swapan Sharma, rushed to the scene with a heavy police force to restore law and order. A case has been registered against 24 prisoners in connection with the incident. Speaking to reporters, Sharma vowed to take strict action against those responsible and emphasized that he would not tolerate any attempts to disrupt law and order within or outside the jail premises. The incident has raised concerns about the safety and security of prison officials and the need for stricter measures to prevent such incidents in the future. Punjab Jail Minister Laljit Singh Bhullar has sought a detailed report from the prison authorities. This is not the first time Ludhiana Central Jail has witnessed a major clash between inmates, with a similar incident reported in 2019.
