Maharashtra Legislative Council Deputy Chairperson Neelam Gorhe is spearheading an urgent call to action against the sale of nylon manja, a highly hazardous thread linked to multiple fatalities and injuries. In a strongly worded representation to the Union and state governments, Gorhe urged for a comprehensive ban on nylon manja, including an immediate halt to its online sale. This plea is backed by a dire need for stricter enforcement measures. Gorhe's appeal was prompted by a series of incidents in Maharashtra, including reported deaths in Wardha, Nashik, Bhiwandi, and other regions, where individuals have suffered severe injuries due to nylon manja. Furthermore, this non-biodegradable thread has been responsible for the large-scale deaths of birds and other animals. The deputy chairperson emphasized that the availability of nylon manja on e-commerce platforms, often disguised as 'fishing line,' 'nylon thread,' or 'strong wire,' has exacerbated the issue. Gorhe has specifically requested the Centre to issue guidelines to e-commerce companies, mandating an immediate cessation of deliveries of such materials in Maharashtra. To ensure effective enforcement, she suggested the establishment of district-level special task forces to conduct raids on markets, godowns, and stock points, with the authority to seize illicit stock. Offenses should be registered under applicable provisions, including culpable homicide, the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, and the Environment Protection Act. To promote environmentally friendly alternatives, Gorhe proposed financial support, training, and incentives for khadi and village industries, as well as local manufacturers, to produce safe and eco-friendly cotton manja. Her efforts aim to mitigate the dangers posed by nylon manja and foster a more sustainable approach to traditional practices.
