A cold wave warning has been issued for several districts in Maharashtra, with a yellow alert sounded in Jalgaon, Pune, Solapur, Nashik, Jalna, and Nagpur. The alert is expected to remain in effect until Saturday, December 13. While Mumbai has not received an alert, other areas like Nashik, Solapur, Pune, Parbhani, and Jalna are experiencing a drop in temperatures. According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), a cold wave is likely to prevail in isolated pockets over Madhya Maharashtra and Marathwada. The IMD has predicted a gradual fall in minimum temperatures by 2-3 degrees over the next three days, before rising thereafter. The IMD has also issued cold wave warnings for Telangana, North Interior Karnataka, and North Interior Odisha, while dense fog conditions are expected in Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, and Mizoram from December 11-15. The winter season is expected to be particularly harsh in central India, with above-normal occurrences of cold wave days predicted in parts of northwest and northeast India. This year, Maharashtra has experienced its harshest winter in the past five years, with the IMD recording the highest number of 'cold wave' and 'severe cold wave' days in the state since 2020. Former head of the forecasting division at IMD Pune attributes the cold wave to dry, northerly winds sweeping down the state, resulting in rapid radiation cooling at night.
