Imphal, Manipur: Clashes erupted in Imphal East on Friday between security forces and internally displaced persons (IDPs) protesting the government's decision to hold the Sangai Festival. The festival, aimed at promoting normalcy in the state, has been met with resistance from IDPs who claim it's insensitive to their plight. The Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) had called for a cease-work strike and protests against the festival, citing its potential financial benefits for a select few. The government, however, urged support for the event. The Sangai Festival, an annual cultural program, usually takes place from November 21 to 30. But this year's inaugural day turned chaotic as a large group of displaced persons attempted to march towards the main venue. Security forces intervened, resorting to a lathi charge and tear-gas shells to disperse the crowd. Two police officers, including Superintendent of Police Shivanand Surve, were injured in the scuffle. Protestors pelted stones at security personnel, and one police officer was detained before being released. The IDPs reiterated their stand, saying the festival's timing is unacceptable. Meanwhile, hundreds of IDPs from Churachandpur district marched towards their intended resettlement location. The situation in Manipur remains tense, with the government facing criticism for prioritizing the festival over the needs of its citizens. The IDPs' concerns and demands for resettlement and security remain unaddressed, casting a shadow over the state's attempts to restore normalcy.
