In a heartwarming display of loyalty, a pack of stray dogs in Nabadwip, West Bengal, came to the rescue of a newborn baby left abandoned outside a washroom. The infant was discovered in a railway workers' colony in Nadia district, with no cloth or note to identify the child or its parents. According to residents, the stray dogs formed a protective circle around the baby, keeping it safe from harm until morning. Sukla Mondal, a resident who first spotted the baby, recalled the scene: 'The dogs were not aggressive. They looked alert, as if they understood the child was fighting to live.' The dogs' presence was a surprise to locals, who often chased them away. However, on this occasion, they proved to be vigilant guardians of the newborn. A resident wrapped the baby in her dupatta and alerted neighbours, who took the child to Maheshganj Hospital and later shifted it to Krishnanagar Sadar Hospital. Doctors confirmed that the baby had no injuries, and the blood found on its head was likely from birth. The police have launched an investigation, suspecting someone from the locality may have abandoned the child. Child welfare authorities have begun procedures for the infant's long-term care. As a token of appreciation, locals were seen feeding the stray dogs that had shielded the newborn. The incident has left residents in awe of the dogs' selfless act, and authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the abandonment of the baby.
