In a sudden shift, Mizoram's ruling Zoram People's Movement (ZPM) has parted ways with the Congress and formed an alliance with the Mizo National Front (MNF) to take control of the Lai Autonomous District Council (LADC) on December 18. The move comes days after the Congress ended its pre-poll alliance with the MNF and opted to partner with the ZPM in LADC. The Congress had initially attempted to sway elected council members to their side. The LADC serves as a self-governing body for the Lai ethnic community, handling local governance, customary laws, land management, and development activities within its jurisdiction. In the December 3 LADC election, the MNF secured eight seats, followed by the Congress with seven seats, and the ZPM with six seats. The BJP and independent candidates secured two seats each. ZPM and MNF leaders announced their alliance in a joint statement on Monday, stating that they have formed the Lairam Legislature Party and elected T. Zakunga as its leader, who will become the Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the council. The MNF will hold the posts of deputy CEM and three Executive Members, while the ZPM will hold five Executive Member posts. Mizoram's three autonomous district councils have been plagued by defections and political uncertainty, with the 12th LADC election witnessing significant changes since the results were announced on December 9.
