Modi Charts Vision for Modern, Citizen-Focused Indian Policing at DGPs Conference

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has urged police leaders across India to transform their practices and adopt a citizen-centric approach, emphasizing the need for modernization and technological integration. Speaking at the 60th All India Conference of Director Generals and Inspector Generals of Police in Raipur, Modi called for a renewed focus on professionalism, sensitivity, and responsiveness in policing. The three-day conference, themed "Viksit Bharat: Security Dimensions," aims to align India's policing practices with the nation's vision of a developed India. At the Indian Institute of Management in Raipur, Modi emphasized the importance of strengthening urban policing and revitalizing tourist police in rapidly growing cities. He also stressed the need to increase public awareness of newly enacted laws, including the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam, and Bharatiya Nagrik Suraksha Sanhita, which replace colonial-era laws. Modi called for greater use of technology, suggesting that state and union territory police link their databases with Artificial Intelligence to produce actionable intelligence. He also encouraged universities to study the use of forensics in investigations to reinforce the criminal justice system. The conference has seen detailed deliberations on the Vision 2047 roadmap for policing, counter-terrorism, and counter-radicalization, as well as the use of technology to enhance women's safety and reforms to strengthen forensic-based investigation and prosecution. In his address, Modi also highlighted the need for a Whole-of-Government approach to tackle narcotics, emphasizing the importance of enforcement, rehabilitation, and community-level intervention. He called for stronger preparedness and coordinated response mechanisms to protect lives and minimize disruption during natural disasters like cyclones and floods. During the ceremony, Modi presented the President's Police Medals for Distinguished Service to officers of the Intelligence Bureau and honored the three best-performing cities under the Urban Policing Awards, introduced to encourage innovation and improvement in policing in urban environments. The conference was attended by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, and other top officials from across the country.
