New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Donald Trump have instructed officials to expedite discussions on a bilateral trade agreement, with the US Trade Representative set to visit India next week for further talks.
The trade deal was a key issue discussed during the meeting between Modi and Trump on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Evian, with the need for 'certainty' in trade-related matters with the US being a major concern.
The two leaders had not met in 16 months due to Modi's absence from the US and Trump's non-visit to India, but Wednesday's meeting was held in a 'good atmosphere', according to Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri.
US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer is expected to meet the Commerce Minister and take the talks forward, with the trade deal having 'created a certain amount of uncertainty' over the past year.
The meeting between Modi and Trump aimed to restore normalcy to the bilateral relationship, which was strained after Trump imposed 50% tariffs on Indian exports.
