Mohali Kabaddi Player Slain Minutes Before Tournament Opener

A shocking incident marred a kabaddi tournament in Mohali on Monday, when unidentified shooters opened fire on the players and spectators, killing 30-year-old Rana Balachauria, a key organizer and participant. The incident occurred at around 5:30 pm at a ground in Sector 82, where a packed crowd was watching the match. Eyewitnesses reported that the attackers, who arrived in a Bolero vehicle, fired shots as the teams were entering the field, sending players and spectators scrambling for cover. Initially, some in the crowd mistook the sound for firecrackers, but chaos erupted when it became clear that live rounds had been fired. Rana Balachauria, whose real name is Kanwar Digvijay Singh, was rushed to a nearby hospital with critical gunshot injuries to the head and face. Unfortunately, he was declared brought dead upon arrival. The police have launched a search operation to trace the assailants and have registered a case to investigate the motive behind the attack. Deputy Superintendent of Police HS Bal, who was the chief guest at the event, had left the venue shortly before the shooting. The incident has sent shockwaves through the sporting community, with many expressing their condolences to Balachauria's family and loved ones. An investigation is underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the attack.
