MP Hawk Force Inspector Killed in Maoist Encounter on Border

A 26-year-old inspector with the Madhya Pradesh Hawk Force, Ashish Sharma, was fatally shot during a joint operation with Chhattisgarh and Maharashtra forces against Maoists in a forest on the MP-Chhattisgarh border on Wednesday. According to anti-naxal operations deputy director general of police Pankaj Srivastava, the police asked the Maoists to surrender but they opened fire, prompting the forces to retaliate. Inspector Sharma was leading a three-person team and was rushed to the hospital after being injured in the encounter. Unfortunately, he was declared dead upon arrival. Ashish Sharma, a resident of Bohani village in Narsinghpur district, was selected as a sub-inspector in 2016 and had received two gallantry medals from the Government of India in recognition of his bravery in anti-Maoist operations. The Madhya Pradesh government had awarded him an out-of-turn promotion for his services. Chief Minister Mohan Yadav paid tribute to Sharma, hailing him as a martyr who displayed unprecedented valour and courage during the operation. Yadav extended his condolences to the bereaved family and said Sharma's supreme sacrifice will always be remembered in the national campaign to eradicate Maoists.
