The Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail project has achieved a significant construction milestone with the successful excavation of a second mountain tunnel in Palghar, Maharashtra. The 454-meter-long and 14.4-meter-wide tunnel will accommodate both up and down tracks, marking a major step forward in the project's progress. Within a month of their previous breakthrough, construction workers have completed the second mountain tunnel, MT-6, using the cutting-edge New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM). This technique allows for flexibility in complex geological conditions and irregular tunnel shapes, where traditional tunnel boring machines are not suitable. As of January 27, significant progress has been made in the project, with at least 334km of viaducts, 17 river bridges, and 12 major crossings completed. Track laying and electrification work is gaining momentum in the Gujarat section. In Maharashtra, construction is advancing rapidly, with work underway on the project's longest river bridge on the Vaitarna river and foundation-level work on other major rivers. To ensure worker safety, real-time monitoring, geotechnical instruments, fire safety measures, proper ventilation, and controlled access arrangements are in place. The excavation of the mountain tunnel is expected to be completed within 12 months. With multiple fronts of construction progressing rapidly, officials are confident that the project will continue to make significant strides in the coming months.
