A rare and elusive pygmy killer whale, typically found in deep waters, has been discovered dead on the shores of Odisha's Bhadrak district. The 15-foot-long whale, estimated to weigh around 800-1,000 kg, was found near the Kasia fishing jetty on Saturday morning. According to Forest Range Officer Atulya Kumar Mohanty, the whale may have suffered injuries from a boat or trawler that drifted it towards the shore. An investigation has been launched to determine the exact cause of its death. A necropsy was conducted by Block Veterinary Officer Sudipta Jena and Marine Fisheries Extension Officer Jagadish Barik, with tissue and blood samples collected for further analysis. The rare sighting has drawn a large crowd to the beach, where the whale's distinctive white lips and dark eyepatch were visible. Belonging to the dolphin family, the pygmy killer whale is a sight rarely seen in tropical and subtropical waters.
