A massive counterfeit Nandhini ghee racket has been dismantled in Karnataka, with the arrest of a Mysuru couple at its alleged center. Shivakumar (45) and his wife Ramya (40) were taken into custody by the central crime branch (CCB) on Wednesday. The couple is suspected of producing and distributing large quantities of fake Nandhini ghee across the state. According to CCB officers, the investigation began with a raid on a storage facility in Chamarajpet on November 14, where 8,136 litres of counterfeit ghee were seized, along with four arrests. Further investigation revealed that the Mysuru couple allegedly supplied the fake ghee to a distribution network led by Mahendra, who was arrested earlier. The CCB has now traced the manufacturing setup to a clandestine factory in Tamil Nadu, where high-tech machines were being used to produce and label adulterated ghee. The police have frozen ₹60 lakh held in accounts linked to the couple and are working to identify all members of the supply chain. The inquiry has widened to multiple districts, with evidence suggesting that the fake ghee was being sold at various parlors and retail outlets. The CCB's DCP, Sriharibabu, said that investigators are examining whether any consignments had been shipped out of the state and are working to determine the scale of the distribution chain. The case has raised concerns that the network may have operated over a longer period, with records suggesting a similar case in Mysuru in the past.
