In a significant move against gender-based violence, Nagaland's Social Welfare Advisor Wangpang Konyak has launched the state's first Gender Resource Centre. The centre is a crucial step towards creating a violence-free society for women and girls, as emphasized by Konyak on International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. Konyak highlighted the alarming rise in crimes against women in Kohima, with many cases going unreported due to stigma. He stressed that violence against women is not just a women's issue, but a human rights concern that affects nearly one in three women globally. Konyak urged communities to break their silence and called for stronger male participation in promoting safety and equality. The launch of the Gender Resource Centre comes as Nagaland expands its Mission Shakti services, including One Stop Centres in all 17 districts, which have addressed 1,703 cases so far. The 181 Women Helpline and 1098 Child Helpline have received 3,396 calls since 2016. Konyak and Secretary for Social Welfare Limawabang Jamir emphasized the importance of collective action in combating gender-based violence. Jamir introduced SheBox, an online platform for reporting workplace sexual harassment, and urged citizens to make homes, workplaces, and cyberspace safer for women. The new Gender Resource Centre will serve as a safe space for survivors and a training hub for families, police, village councils, churches, and student bodies. Konyak envisioned a future where every daughter goes to school without fear, every wife sleeps in peace, and every woman walks with her head held high. As Nagaland joins the global 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, the state is making a commitment to unite against violence and create a safer environment for women and girls.
