Mumbai's new aviation hub, the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA), has taken off successfully, marking a significant milestone in its operational journey. On its first day, the airport witnessed 15 scheduled departure flights to key domestic destinations. However, from December 26, 2025, the frequency will increase to 25 flights daily, and by January 2026, it's expected to reach 40 departures per day. The airport, spanning 2,866 acres, is one of the largest in the country, designed to accommodate up to 90 million passengers annually. IndiGo, Akasa Air, and Air India Express are among the airlines operating flights from the NMIA. As the airport becomes operational, passengers can expect enhanced regional connectivity for domestic destinations like Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka, and Telangana. This new aviation hub will also reduce travel time and provide an alternative to passengers traveling through the congested Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport. Airport officials and partner airline representatives welcomed passengers at the terminal, ensuring compliance with security protocols set by the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS). The NMIA is expected to boost economic activity, tourism growth, and regional connectivity in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region and surrounding areas.
