The Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) marked its successful commencement of operations on Thursday, with an IndiGo Airbus A320 from Bengaluru landing at 8 am and departing for Hyderabad at 8.40 am. This milestone positions Mumbai among global aviation hubs like London, New York, and Tokyo, each boasting multiple airports to meet growing demand. In its first phase, the airport handled 15 departure flights on December 25, a promising start to its commercial operations. With IndiGo, Akasa Air, and Air India Express leading the way, NMIA will operate around 25 daily flights from December 26, increasing to 40 departures per day by January 2026. The airport has surpassed its initial announcement of 18 daily flights to 15 destinations in May. IndiGo will connect Navi Mumbai to key Indian cities, while Akasa Air plans to expand its operations from 35 daily flights to 300 domestic and 50 international flights every week. Air India Express will directly connect Navi Mumbai with Bangalore and New Delhi from its first day of operations. The airport's inaugural arrival and departure were honored with a ceremonial water cannon salute. The airport's capacity to handle 9 crore passengers is a testament to its potential as a major aviation hub.
