The National Cadet Corps (NCC) is celebrating its 78th Raising Day today, marking a significant milestone in its growth from a modest 20,000 cadets in 1948 to the world's largest uniformed youth organisation with 20 lakh cadets. Over the past decade, the NCC has seen a substantial increase of six lakh cadets, demonstrating its expanding reach and influence. A solemn wreath-laying ceremony was held at the National War Memorial in New Delhi, where Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh and Director General, National Cadet Corps, Lt Gen Virendra Vats paid homage to fallen heroes on behalf of the entire organisation. The event set the tone for nationwide celebrations that highlight the NCC's crucial role in nation-building and youth development. Today, the NCC has a presence in 713 out of India's 780 districts, making it one of the most widely represented youth institutions in the country. To commemorate its 78th Raising Day, the NCC has planned various events across the country, including public service initiatives like blood donation drives, tree plantation activities, and anti-drug awareness programmes. Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh applauded the NCC's contributions in multiple spheres, highlighting flagship initiatives such as disaster-response training, the NCC Mt Everest expedition, and the inclusion of drone and cyber training in the curriculum. These efforts demonstrate the organisation's continued focus on community engagement, environmental protection, and social responsibility.
