The National Council for Vocational Education and Training (NCVET) has taken a significant step towards strengthening its regulatory powers by establishing a dedicated research division. This move aims to provide evidence-based regulations for the skilling and vocational education sector, which has been fragmented and project-specific until now. The NCVET general body, chaired by Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship Jayant Chaudhary, approved the proposal to set up the research division during its recent meeting. This division will function as a think tank, conducting research on labour market trends, qualification relevance, system performance, and policy innovation. According to officials, the research division will play a crucial role in generating empirical evidence, assessing system performance, and providing data-driven policy support. The division will be headed by a research advisory committee comprising sectoral experts and members from relevant government organisations, industries, and academia. Harshil Sharma, a labour economics expert, believes that positioning NCVET as a think tank can significantly strengthen regulatory decisions, accreditation norms, and future skills planning. However, he stresses that the research division must go beyond relying on secondary data and design a national skilling and skills-demand survey to inform qualification design, assessment standards, and accreditation decisions. The establishment of the research division is a major milestone for NCVET, enabling it to provide more effective and informed regulations for the skilling and vocational education sector. As the country continues to navigate the complexities of its labour market, this move is expected to drive positive change and support the growth of India's skilling ecosystem.
