New Delhi: Netflix has countered defamation allegations filed by former Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) chief Sameer Wankhede against the streaming platform and Shah Rukh Khan's production house, Red Chillies Entertainment. In a Delhi High Court hearing on Thursday, Netflix's lawyer Rajiv Nayyar argued that the presence of Aryan Khan, Shah Rukh Khan's son, as the director of the series 'Bollywood Ba***ds' does not establish malice against Wankhede. The series, which explores the darker aspects of Bollywood, features a character with similarities to Wankhede's appearance and mannerisms. However, Nayyar contended that this is not enough to prove defamation, as the threshold for public servants like Wankhede is significantly higher. Wankhede had claimed that the content was added to ridicule him and settle past scores, but Nayyar argued that the show is a satire that exposes the functioning of the Bollywood movie industry. The lawyer noted that the series features various satirical elements, including conversations on drug abuse, MeToo, and nepotism, indicating that it is a critical portrayal of the industry. Red Chillies Entertainment had previously defended the series, stating that the episode in question is a fictional story set during a Bollywood success party and not a recreation of the Cordelia cruise raid. The Delhi High Court will continue to hear the case.
