In a breakthrough move, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is set to launch a real-time safety alert system for highway users. Through a partnership with Reliance Jio, commuters will soon receive crucial information via SMS, WhatsApp, and high-priority voice calls about potential hazards, including accident-prone stretches, stray cattle zones, and foggy areas. The system will also integrate with the NHAI's mobile app and emergency helpline (1033), providing verified information to drivers during critical moments. The initiative aims to create a unified safety layer across the country's expanding highway network, eventually covering all highway users regardless of their mobile network provider. By leveraging existing telecom towers, the system can be deployed rapidly without the need for additional infrastructure. As part of the pilot deployment, the NHAI will initially focus on risk-zone identification and alert thresholds in specific regional offices. The initiative will comply with all applicable regulatory provisions and data-protection requirements, ensuring the safety and security of users. This innovative system is expected to significantly reduce crashes on national highways and improve road safety for millions of commuters. With the NHAI's partnership with Jio, the stage is set for a safer and more connected highway experience for all.
