Nitin Nabin, 45, is poised to become the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) youngest-ever president, marking a significant generational shift in the party's leadership. With no other candidates in the fray, Nabin's nomination was accepted by Returning Officer K Laxman on Monday, backed by 37 sets of nomination papers from states, union territories, and the parliamentary party. The BJP's organisational polls, or Sangathan Parv, have been underway since the election of 30 state presidents. The process allows for the election of the national president once 50% of the states have completed their polls. Nabin, a five-term legislator from Bihar, will lead the party in the upcoming assembly polls in West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Assam, and the UT of Puducherry. He will also oversee the long-overdue organisational overhaul. The BJP's decision to select Nabin, a relatively unknown figure until now, is seen as a bold move towards internal democracy and inclusivity. Senior party leaders hail the process as a transparent, participatory, and democratic exercise, from the booth level to the national level. The selection of Nabin sends a strong message to the younger generation, inviting them to join politics and participate in the party's decision-making process. As former union minister Anurag Thakur put it, "This is a big message from PM Modi to Gen Z, inviting them to join politics...In the coming elections, we will fight under the leadership of Nitin Nabin, and PM Modi's popularity will help us win."
