In a bid to combat left-wing extremism in Odisha, the state government has revamped its Maoist surrender and rehabilitation policy. The revised scheme now offers increased financial assistance, rewards for surrendered firearms, and other benefits to encourage hardcore cadres to lay down arms. The policy aims to wean away Maoist fighters from extremism and provide them with gainful employment and entrepreneurial opportunities. The surrendered cadres will be classified into two categories: category A, which includes high-ranking officials, and category B, comprising lower-ranking members. Category A cadres will receive up to ₹5 lakh in financial assistance, while category B members will get ₹2.5 lakh. The rewards for surrendered weapons have also been significantly increased, with those surrendering high-caliber firearms and explosives eligible for the enhanced financial aid. Active surrendered Naxalites carrying a reward of ₹5 lakh or more will receive an additional ₹10 lakh, deposited as a fixed deposit in a bank. The interest earned from this amount will be given to the surrendered Naxalite, subject to satisfactory behavior and conduct, as determined by the Surrender and Rehabilitation Committee. The revised policy seeks to create a more conducive environment for Maoist cadres to surrender and reintegrate into society, ultimately contributing to the eradication of left-wing extremism in Odisha.
