Operation Sindoor Marks Turning Point in India's Counter-Terror Strategy, Says President

President Droupadi Murmu hailed Operation Sindoor as a pivotal moment in India's counter-terrorism efforts, emphasizing the country's commitment to responsible action in pursuit of peace. The operation, launched in response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, aimed to disrupt terror and military installations in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. In her address at the Chanakya Defence Dialogue 2025, the President praised the armed forces for demonstrating professionalism, patriotism, and adaptability in safeguarding India's sovereignty. She noted that the international landscape is rapidly changing, with shifting alliances, technological disruptions, and emerging domains of competition. India has demonstrated its ability to balance strategic autonomy with global responsibility, said the President. The country's diplomacy, economy, and armed forces are working together to project an image of a nation that seeks peace while being prepared to protect its borders and citizens with strength and conviction. Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh emphasized the importance of India becoming a defence technological and industrial powerhouse, which would significantly enhance national security. He proposed reforms to blend central direction with market discipline, leveraging key performance indicators to drive growth. The defence ministry is working towards a new era of industrial reforms and collaboration, with a focus on creating a level playing field for private sector companies to partner with defence public sector undertakings. Singh noted that India's reliance on the public sector has hindered its ability to compete with countries like China, which has built a hybrid defence and industrial machine. Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi outlined a three-phase approach to build capabilities and transition to an integrated future-ready force design by 2047. He highlighted the decisive outcomes achieved during Operation Sindoor and emphasized the need to accelerate the adoption of emerging technologies such as AI, cyber, and quantum systems.
