A protest erupted outside the Delhi High Court on Friday, with demonstrators expressing outrage over the conditional bail granted to Kuldeep Singh Sengar, a former BJP leader convicted of raping a 17-year-old girl in Unnao in 2017. The survivor's mother, who has been vocal about her concerns, urged the court to reject the bail, stating that her family feels 'extremely unsafe' with Sengar's release. Sengar was initially sentenced to life imprisonment in 2019, but the Delhi High Court suspended the sentence earlier this week, citing the fact that he had already served more than the maximum punishment prescribed under the POCSO Act. The court's decision has sparked fears within the survivor's family, who claim that Sengar is a powerful man with a history of using his henchmen to carry out his dirty work. The survivor, now 24, has been provided with court-ordered protection and is accompanied by CRPF personnel at all times. However, her mother has expressed dissatisfaction with the security measures, stating that the protection provided to her and her three children until March this year was subsequently withdrawn. Women's rights activists joined the protest, demanding justice for the survivor and calling for the rapist to be held accountable. The protesters cited the court's decision as a setback for women's rights in India, stating that it sends a wrong message to perpetrators of such heinous crimes. The case has sparked a national outcry, with many calling for the Supreme Court to intervene and reject Sengar's bail. The survivor's family remains resolute in their pursuit of justice, vowing to seek redressal from the highest court in the land if necessary. 'If we don't get justice in the Supreme Court, we will go to another country,' the survivor's mother declared, underscoring the family's desperation for justice.
