Parliament Panel Probes Coaching Centres, AI's Impact on Indian Education

A high-level parliamentary committee is set to review the rapidly expanding coaching centre industry and the growing influence of artificial intelligence (AI) on India's education system. The 31-member panel, led by Congress MP Digvijaya Singh, will assess various education sector schemes, including the Pradhan Mantri Schools for Rising India (PM SHRI) initiative and the Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA). The committee has identified 28 key areas to examine, including the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the utilisation of Union grants, and the effectiveness of continuous assessment at school and board levels. It will also study the guidelines for recognising private schools, inclusion measures for children with disabilities, and progress towards universalising early childhood education. In the higher education sector, the panel will review the proliferation of coaching centres, the integration of vocational education, and support for mental health. It will also assess the functioning of centrally funded institutions, the implementation of reservations for reserved categories, and the impact of AI on students' education. The committee's review comes as the government continues to grapple with issues such as school closures, access to libraries, and reforms needed in the Right to Education (RTE) Act, 2009. The panel is expected to submit its report by the end of the year, providing a comprehensive overview of the education sector's strengths and weaknesses.
