The winter session of Parliament has officially begun, with union parliamentary affairs minister Kiren Rijiju announcing the start of the session on December 1. It will continue until December 19. Prime Minister Narendra Modi called for a smooth session, urging opposition parties to refrain from 'drama'. As the session kicks off, opposition MPs are set to raise several pressing issues, including the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, equality, income, the Red Fort blast, Delhi pollution, and foreign policy. On the first day, Lok Sabha was adjourned twice due to intense sloganeering from the opposition over SIR and vote chori allegations. The government convened an all-party meeting before the session to discuss the agenda for the coming weeks. The opposition has demanded a debate on SIR, warning that the functioning of both Houses may be affected if this request is denied. Beyond the electoral rolls issue, opposition MPs plan to bring up topics linked to equality, income, the Delhi blast, pollution, and foreign policy. The government is also focusing on a range of economic and financial bills, including the Atomic Energy Bill 2025, which aims to allow private investment in the nuclear power-generation sector. The winter session will have 15 sittings and is scheduled to run until December 19.
