PM Modi Fosters Ties with Indian Diaspora, Tech Entrepreneurs in Johannesburg

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with tech entrepreneurs and members of the Indian community in Johannesburg, South Africa, during his visit to attend the G20 Leaders' Summit. Modi had a productive interaction with Indian-origin tech entrepreneurs, discussing their work in various sectors, including FinTech, social media, and healthcare. He encouraged them to strengthen their ties with India and collaborate with local communities. In a separate meeting, Modi spoke with members of the Indian community in South Africa, who are actively involved in community organizations. They shared their experiences and expressed gratitude for India's progress in various fields. Modi urged them to continue fostering people-to-people connections and promote Indian culture, including practices like Yoga and Ayurveda. The prime minister emphasized the significant role of the Indian diaspora, comprising over 1.7 million people in South Africa, in strengthening the historical bonds between India and South Africa. He also commended their efforts to connect the youth with the legacies of Mahatma Gandhi and Nelson Mandela. During his visit, Modi received a 'Kalash' from the Chinmaya Mission, symbolizing a gift of Shree Anna or millets from India and South Africa. The Kalash will be placed in the Annapoorna Devi Temple in Durban. Modi also met with the winners of the Bharat Ko Janiye Quiz, which aims to encourage members of the diaspora to learn about India's history and culture. In a separate meeting with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, Modi discussed progress in cooperation between their countries in areas like defense, security, trade, and people-to-people ties. Modi also met with Naspers chairman and CEO to discuss expanding investments in India's digital ecosystem. The G20 Summit, hosted by India in 2023, marked the first time the African Union was included as a member.
