Prime Minister Narendra Modi stepped up his attack on the Trinamool Congress (TMC) in West Bengal, urging the people to opt for a change and a BJP-led government in the state. In a speech that marked a new phase in the state's election campaign, Modi introduced the slogan 'Paltano darkar, chayee BJP sarkar' (the time for change, a BJP government), as he flagged off the Vande Bharat sleeper trains in Malda, West Bengal. Modi's address targeted the TMC government, led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, accusing it of preventing the Centre's Ayushman Bharat scheme from reaching the people. He also claimed that the state government has been 'looting public money' and hindering central aid from reaching Bengal residents. Assembly elections in West Bengal are due in the first half of this year, and the BJP is eyeing to wrest power from the TMC government, which has been in power since 2011. Modi's move is seen as a significant development in the state's election dynamics, where a fierce battle of catchphrases is a common feature. Modi also drew parallels with the recent urban local body election results in Maharashtra, where the BJP scored a historic victory. He highlighted the party's record win in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), one of the world's largest municipal corporations. The Prime Minister expressed confidence that the people of Bengal will ensure a resounding victory for the BJP this time, citing the party's unprecedented support in areas previously considered difficult to win. Modi's statement suggests that the BJP is gearing up for a tough fight in the state elections, but is optimistic about its prospects.
