In a significant move, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday announced the implementation of four labour codes, hailed as the most comprehensive reforms since India's independence. These codes, effective immediately, merge 29 fragmented laws into a unified framework, simplifying compliance and promoting business growth. The labour codes, comprising the Code of Wages, Industrial Relations Code, Code on Social Security, and Occupational Safety, Health and Working Conditions Code, aim to provide universal social security, timely payment of wages, and safe working conditions for all workers, particularly women and youth. The prime minister emphasized that these reforms will create a future-ready ecosystem, protecting workers' rights and boosting economic growth. Key benefits include universal social security coverage for gig workers, mandatory appointment letters, and statutory minimum wages. The reforms also expand rights and safety for women, including night-shift work and free health check-ups, and introduce a single registration system for all workers. These landmark reforms are expected to drive job creation, increase productivity, and accelerate India's journey towards a developed nation.
