Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday kicked off the Winter Session of Parliament by urging the Opposition to shift its focus from drama to delivering results in the House. Speaking at the commencement of the session, PM Modi praised India's democracy, citing the high voter turnout in the recent Bihar elections as a testament to its strength. In a veiled attack on the Opposition, PM Modi asked its members to move beyond the Bihar poll outcome and work towards making the Winter Session productive. He emphasized that no drama is needed in Parliament, but rather a commitment to delivering results. The Opposition has been demanding a debate on the special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, a move opposed by the government. The Winter Session, which will conclude on December 19, is expected to be stormy, with the government planning to introduce 10 new bills and hold a discussion on the 150th anniversary of India's national song, Vande Mataram. In a conciliatory tone, parliamentary affairs minister Kiren Rijiju assured that the government is committed to working with the Opposition to ensure a smooth functioning of the House. However, the Opposition remains firm on its demand for a debate on SIR, with Samajwadi Party lawmaker Ramgopal Yadav warning that the House will not be allowed to function without it. PM Modi also offered his advice to the Opposition, saying he is willing to share tips on how they can improve their performance and revamp their strategies. The Bihar election outcome, in which the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance secured a massive victory, has left the Opposition reeling, with many leaders struggling to come to terms with their loss.
