A shocking case of poaching has been uncovered in the Chilika Lake, India's largest waterfowl habitat. Wildlife personnel arrested 27-year-old Sheikh Mustak of Maluda in Puri district for allegedly killing migratory birds in the area. During a search, two dead birds - a little egret and a cattle egret - were found in his possession, along with a country-made gun and a motorcycle. The Chilika wildlife division has been cracking down on poaching in the lake, with 21 temporary anti-poaching camps set up in the area. The camps will remain operational until the end of March. In recent weeks, three individuals have been arrested for poaching and fishing in the restricted sanctuary area. The Chilika Lake is a vital stopover for thousands of migratory birds, who travel from distant lands such as Northern Eurasia, the Caspian region, and Siberia to escape the harsh winter. The birds typically begin their journey back home in the first or second week of March. The forest department is working to ensure the birds' safety and prevent further poaching incidents.
