President Droupadi Murmu has reaffirmed the Centre's commitment to ensuring peace and all-round development in Manipur, urging the people of the state to work towards harmony and stability. During her two-day visit to the state, she inaugurated 12 projects worth ₹207 crore and laid the foundation stones of 14 projects amounting to ₹1,180 crore. Murmu acknowledged the pain inflicted on the people of Manipur due to the recent violence and assured that addressing their concerns is the government's top priority. She emphasized the Centre's commitment to promoting equitable development across the state and ensuring that the benefits of progress reach every corner of Manipur. The President's maiden visit to Manipur included a ceremonial guard of honour at the Imphal International Airport, a polo match at the historic Imphal Polo Ground, and a civic reception programme at the City Convention. On Friday, she will pay tribute to Manipur's women freedom fighters at the Nupi Lal ceremony and visit Senapati district to address a public gathering and launch development initiatives. However, a total shutdown was called by a coalition of six banned underground outfits, boycotting the President's visit. The shutdown, which includes the suspension of educational institutions, markets, and public transportation, will remain in effect until the President leaves Manipur. Murmu's visit marks the second high-profile visit to Manipur in three months, following Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit in September. The state has been grappling with ethnic violence since May 2023, which has left at least 260 people dead and displaced 60,000. The clashes have involved various communities, prompting the dismissal of the state government and the imposition of President's Rule.
