In a move to observe Republic Day, the Punjab government has declared a state-wide holiday for all schools on January 27. The decision, announced by the School Education Department, applies to government, aided, recognized, and private schools across the state. This decision comes as Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann emphasized the need for the state to have its own capital, Chandigarh, which is currently a joint capital with Haryana. Mann, speaking on the 77th Republic Day, highlighted the long-standing issue, reiterating his government's commitment to securing Chandigarh as Punjab's capital. The Chief Minister has been vocal about Punjab's rights and has raised the issue with the Centre, citing the state's historical contributions and sacrifices for the nation. Meanwhile, Punjab's tableau at the Republic Day celebrations in New Delhi honored the 350th year of Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib Ji's martyrdom. India's Republic Day commemorates the adoption of the Constitution in 1950, marking the nation's transition to a republic.
