In a bold challenge to the era of constant connectivity, a village in Punjab has taken a unique stance against phone addiction. The 'Great Sitting Challenge', held in Gholia Khurd village of Moga district, saw 55 participants from across Punjab and Chandigarh gather to test their willpower and endurance. The contest, which lasted for 31 hours and 4 minutes, was designed to be a digital detox, where participants had to sit in one place without using their phones, sleeping, or even getting up to use the washroom. The rules were strict, but the motivation behind the event was clear: to create a world where people can sit for minutes without reaching for their phones. Organisers believe that phone addiction has become a 'disease' that affects people of all ages, and they hope that this event will inspire others to take a similar stand. The participants, ranging from children to the elderly, were provided with food, water, and books to keep their minds occupied. Many of them chanted hymns to keep their minds focused and calm. The event was a resounding success, with Satbir Singh and Lampreet Singh emerging as joint winners, each earning a cycle and ₹3500. Chanan Singh secured the third place with ₹1500. One of the winners shared his experience, saying, 'It felt very good to be rid of the phone.' The event has set a precedent for other villages in Punjab to follow, with a similar event having been held in Barnala district earlier. As the world continues to grapple with the consequences of phone addiction, this village has taken a step towards creating a healthier and more balanced lifestyle.
