The Rajasthan government has formed a committee to prepare a draft Uniform Civil Code (UCC) legislation, aiming to implement a common set of laws for personal matters. The committee, led by former Supreme Court judge Ranjana Prakash Desai, will hold public consultations and seek suggestions through a website to ensure the proposed legislation is inclusive and transparent.
Tribal communities will be exempt from the proposed framework. Rajasthan is the fifth BJP-ruled state to initiate the UCC process, following Uttarakhand, Gujarat, Assam, and Madhya Pradesh.
The proposed legislation aims to eliminate disparities and promote gender equality by ensuring equal rights, including mandatory registration of marriages and divorces, a ban on polygamy, and equal inheritance rights for sons and daughters.
The government is committed to drafting a progressive and model law suited to Rajasthan's social fabric and contemporary requirements.
